Dear Auntie Molly: In loving memory of Molly Mirembe Kulongo

A personal letter that I wrote and posted to Auntie Molly on the 7th of March 2016.

*****************************************************************************
Dear Auntie Molly,

Greetings from your daughter and friend Daisy. You have been deeply in my thoughts and I am sad to admit that I have not stayed in touch with you like I should have and would have liked to. Please forgive me.

I was speaking to a friend before the New Year who was telling me about the words that she shared at her grandmother’s funeral.  She told me that while she was speaking, she realised that she wasn’t saying anything that her grandmother didn’t already know. Oftentimes it’s only when someone passes away that we begin to express our deep feelings towards them and highlight the good things about them. We can even express things that perhaps we didn’t share with them while they were still on this earth.

For this purpose I am writing you this letter.

Auntie, I know that you are currently wrestling with the idea as to whether you may fall asleep sooner rather than later, and I don’t want to wait until then (whenever that may be) to open my heart to you and to express my deep love and gratitude for all that you are and all that you have been to me.

I write you this letter not because you are dead but because in Christ you are ALIVE!

Being a teenager and somewhat new Christian isn’t easy. I remember when I decided to start attending Beckton Maranatha SDA Church and how Aunties such as yourself, Auntie Sarah, Auntie Justine, Auntie Rebecca, Auntie Ruth and Mrs Kavuma really embraced me and looked after me in the absence of my parents. Back then I didn’t appreciate your correction regarding my low cut tops, short skirts, tight clothes and black nail vanish but now I am truly thankful for your consistency and persistence in lovingly showing me the error of my ways.

Transitioning into womanhood I learnt so much from you. By example you showed me what it means to be a woman, a wife and a mother. I watched you open your home to anyone who was in need. You allowed us to use your home for youth bible studies, choir practice, Beckton Sisters recordings, church meetings, social gatherings and even somewhere just to hang out; your home is known to be a safe haven and a place of refuge to many. I remember when visitors would come to the house at night just before you were about to go to bed and you would come downstairs and cook for them and host them. I have seen how God has blessed you and Uncle with 5 precious jewels and how you have offered them back to Him. Each one of your children has played such a significant part in my life and walk with God.

Speaking of being a wife, I remember one morning when you burst into the girls’ room and pretty much told us that we were all too young to get married, and you began to tell us about the true realities of the married life. Auntie, though we were quite unresponsive, texting on our phones while you were talking and generally appeared indifferent, I must admit (especially in my case) that you were right. I truly appreciate the words you shared with us that morning and I have taken note of them. Auntie you truly left no stone unturned, you even spoke to us about the importance of cleanliness and female hygiene, I remember writing about it in my journal hehe :). You have been a living example of your words, and I know this to be true and I can see the fruit of this when I look at Uncle’s deep love for you.

What I cherish the most is our one to one time. I have such good memories of the days I would sit at your bedside and we would talk and talk. I look forward to having more of these moments with you. Auntie, I love the way you show such deep interest in my life choices and especially in my “love life”. I know that you have been praying for me in this area. I know that you long to see the man God (if it is His will) will bring into my life to be my husband and friend. I know that you will be my eyes and my ears and will prayerfully and closely examine his character to see if he is indeed the Lord’s choice. Thank you for the many times you have been a listening ear as I have opened up about my hopes, dreams, doubts and fears.

My sweetest memory with you is when I took some time out to look after you and to cook for you. I cooked so many different vegan dishes for you and Uncle to try, that was a very fun time! I remember asking you if I could practice my massage techniques on you, I know you love massages, so you happily complied :). I know we had our disagreements about chicken and cups of Tetley’s tea, but I honestly enjoyed that time with you. It was a delight to serve you, thank you for giving me an opportunity to live out my faith practically. I learnt so much about what it means to be a medical missionary and to love as Christ loves - seeking to love and draw near to those who He came to save.

Last but not least, I have been thinking about your faith, your love for your Creator, your prayerfulness and your tireless efforts in the women’s ministry department. I once heard that our trials are weighed and measured in heaven before being given to us. To me this means that anything that may befall us is fully considered and assessed before it even touches us. This thought was coupled with the thought that God will not give us more than we can bear. God knows Auntie, that in Him you can face anything. You have been through so much these past few years but you have shown yourself strong in the face of bitter and painful trials. You have clung to your Saviour and Friend, trusting that he will carry you through.  Though you have been disappointed, disheartened and discouraged you always speak of His goodness. I have never heard you speak negatively of God for anything that has befallen you.

In Him you have an unbreakable spirit.

You have proven faithful to God in all your tests and trials and you will prove faithful even in this! Please continue to give Him your whole heart, trust and believe Auntie. Please Auntie, know and believe that God has not forgotten about you. He longs to walk by the way with you – by waters still and deep through places high and steep, He will lead you. Your dear Shepheard wants to guide you through paths of peace and righteousness. Though you feel like you are face to face with death, believe that in all things He is faithful and know that you are still beloved of your God. Remember Christ’s precious blood was shed that you may have life! On this earth, regardless of any sickness, In Christ you do have life and have it more abundantly. His love for you is indomitable and stronger than sickness, suffering and death.

Thank you for holding on for so long Auntie, hold on a little bit longer, His grace is still sufficient for you. Thank you for setting such a good example. I pray that we may seek to be faithful to God that we may stand victorious on that sea of glass and if not we’ll definitely meet at the tree of life. But until then, while on this earth, may our love for our God be pure, passionate, unhindered, resilient, unreserved, unconquerable and endless.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
….For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:35, 38-39

With overflowing love

The letter arrived safely in London and I asked Auntie’s youngest son Ivan if he could read the letter to her. Interestingly, every time he went to visit her in hospital he kept forgetting the letter at home, even though he was sure he had put it in his inside pocket. To cut a long story short, providentially I ended up reading her the letter on the 12th of March 2016, when I went to visit her in hospital.

Sadly Auntie Molly passed away on Friday the 1st of April 2016. I was deeply saddened as I honestly didn’t think that that would be the last time I would see her, but at the same time happy to know that our last memory together was me reading her this letter.  I got to do with Auntie, what she enjoyed the most and what we did the best; I got to sit at her bedside and talk with her, for one final time…

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Revelation 14:13

Rest Auntie, We shall speak again very soon x

Springtime and seedlings

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over [and] gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing [of birds] is come…
Songs of Solomon 2:11-12

Yes, spring time has arrived which means growing session has begun in the UK! I'm so excited as this is my first time starting a garden on my own. I know it won't be completely perfect and I will make some mistakes but I know there's going to be lots to learn and experience.

Starting out
I will be growing some food at home and also at the 7 years plenty allotment nearby. (we've called it that it actually has a completely different name hehe!). This year I will attempt to grow:

Romain lettuce
Spinach
Swiss Card
Carrots
Potatoes
Beetroot
Bell peppers
Tomatoes
Onions
Garlic
Strawberries
Coriander
Mint
Basil
Rosemary
Thyme

It may seem like I'm growing way too much as a first time gardener, but believe me, these are actually my staples! Except Strawberries, I love them but I find they are expensive to buy and spoil very quickly so I want to see if it's more cost effective to grow them. I won't be growing in huge quantities but I want to see what things work and what things don't.

For those of you who are wondering why I am growing food, I think growing your own food is healthier, cheaper and more rewarding! Gardening itself is very good for your physical health as it is very hands on and our bodies benefit from the physical exercise, fresh air and being in nature.  In addition to the physical benefits, it also has spiritual benefits.  The bible often talks about agriculture and uses it as an illustration of our growth in Christ, our reception of his word etc. He uses the natural to illustrate the spiritual (1 Corinthians 15).I'm excited to see how gardening will impact my walk with God, and I'm looking forward to all the object lessons I will learn as I turn the soil, water plants, weed the garden, plant seeds, harvest crops etc . I'm longing to see how he will break up the fallow ground and cultivate the garden beds of my own heart.

I hope to keep you updated on how the garden is going and to share some of the different things I am learning, both the natural and spiritual, so please stay tuned.

Please feel free to share any of your gardening tips with this first time gardener :-)

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat…Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places…

Cry now, rather than later

A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend on the phone, and during our conversation she briefly mentioned that she had broken up with her boyfriend as it was becoming more evident to her that God was not leading them together. She said that she didn’t want to talk about it but asked if I would keep her in my prayers.

Later that day, she sent me a text message saying that she had been breaking down in tears all day. I remember looking at her message and thinking “What should I say?” “What do I tell her?” “What response would best help someone whose heart is breaking?” I didn’t respond directly to her message but this thought came to me - “cry now, rather than later”. By this I mean, it is better to bear the pain and the brunt of a hard but right decision than to cry harder and longer as a result of following through with the wrong decision.

I remember when I was living on campus in my final year of university and during that time I was in the process of severing a friendship. I remember waking up one day and rushing around to get to my early morning lecture, and while I was brushing my teeth I looked into the mirror and, to my surprise, I burst into tears. Now, I’m not talking about a few tear drops down my cheeks; I was literally weeping, almost uncontrollably! Some of my friends and family may find this part quite interesting as those who know me really well know I rarely ever cry. I can't actually remember the last time I cried, I think it may have been about 3 years ago but I think the last time I cried before then was probably about...SORRY!!!! Let me get back to the story! So I was crying in my little ensuite bathroom, feeling like my life was over and that I would never be happy again. The whole situation was so painful but I knew that I had to swallow the bitter pill, resting in the fact that I had made the right decision and God’s grace would be sufficient for me.

Now in 2016, am I still hurting over the situation? No, because the hurt was only temporary and the Lord truly gave me beauty for ashes and a joyful song. During that time, the Lord specifically taught me how to accept with joy whatever His providence ordains and to embrace every gift from God, including loss (I spoke about this really briefly here in my very first blog post
J)

Looking back at the situation in light of what God has done in my life since then, I can honestly say that I didn’t make the right decision but the best decision. Back then I didn’t appreciate it that much but now I am truly happy that I chose to fully embrace the beauty of God’s ways.

So my dear friend, my advice to you and to anyone else who has had to make a painful but right decision is this - Cry on…let it all out, knowing that your tears are honourable before the Lord and are precious tokens of your strength and courage. It may be painful but you have chosen Him over your own ways, the Lord will draw near to you with comfort and healing and will allow you to see the fruits of unyielding obedience and the joy of walking in paths of righteousness.

…. For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. Job 5:18

Cry now rather than later.

Travel Diaries: Arkansas, USA

Ahhh this post is disgracefully late, especially since I traveled to Arkansas last September! Nevertheless I thought I would share some of the highlight from my trip J

1)  Flying solo

It’s been a while since I’ve been on a long haul flight that I actually forgot how much I enjoy flying alone. I absolutely love flying on my own, everything from checking in, finding my terminal, departure gate, boarding the plane and flying! I would actually love to go on a full blown lone holiday but I don’t think I’m brave enough for that yet!

Ready for take off

2) Making friends

The main reason I was in Arkansas was to attend an annual camp meeting/bible prophecy school. I met a lot of people at the camp meeting from all over America and I found it strangely interesting how it felt like I had known them for years, having only just met them a few days prior. We all got on so well, I honestly felt like I was around family. Making friends in Arkansas reinforced to me that in Christ, His children share such deep and meaningful commonalities and are bound together with cords that go beyond age, nationality, culture, distance, life circumstance etc

Blessed be the tides that bind...

3) Hot Springs

…or should I say boiling springs. I visited the Hot Springs National Park and thought I could put my whole arm into the water! Never again!!!! What I did was equivalent to putting my arm into a pot of boiling hot water on a stove…very silly, I know!  :-\ Other than that, I did enjoy the warmth of the water, the steam coming from the flowing streams and the beauty of the actual park.

Hot Springs National Park

4) The Weather

We didn’t get much of a summer in the UK, so I was so thankful for the super-hot summer weather and the extra vitamin D of course J

5) Singing

During song service I always manage to request a hymn that no one knows, and then  end up having to sing a solo (I really hate singing solos...I just don’t do them L) in order to teach the congregation the song.  This awkward moment proved to be a blessing as I was approached to help lead out in song service during the camp meeting. I haven’t lead out in music in such a long time and it was such a blessing to serve and minister for the Lord in this capacity especially in a foreign land.

Singing with wonderful people

6) Mousegate

Now this wasn’t a highlight but I thought I would mention it since I can actually laugh about it now. I live in the countryside so it’s not uncommon for me to have some field mice come in as the weather begins to turn. I usually catch and get rid of them quite quickly as they come in and stay downstairs and only ever come out at night when I am asleep and it’s completely quiet. I’m writing about this so casually and calmly but I absolutely loathe the fact that I get mice; I am completely petrified of them! Even knowing of their presence in my house freaks me out. I was so happy to be away from home knowing that I wouldn’t have to deal with them for a while….you could probably imagine my great distress when I saw mouse traps in the room I was staying in! Where I was staying is very country and I had a very brave and daring American mouse who not only came out to play while I was making noise in the kitchen, but who managed to wrestle itself off a sticky trap  and also eat the  bait clean off a carefully laid snap trap. My most memorable moment of “mousegate” is when the mouse had the audacity to enter my room, get into the closet and chew through items in my handbag. To conclude this tale the mouse never got caught and is probably still on the loose, let’s just say that I left America with a new found respect for the rather sophisticated, reserved and quiet British mouse.

7) Gardening

There’s something about cultivating the ground that leaves deep impressions on the heart and character. I don’t know how to describe it; I don’t know whether to describe it as therapeutic but the more I worked in the greenhouse and spent time selecting and planting seeds the more it awakened a great sense of carefulness, love, humility, tenderness and attention to detail. At first I hated it, I was so hot and bothered while gardening but after getting past the first hurdle of keeping myself from passing out in the green house I actually really enjoyed it.  I planted 3 quarters of the greenhouse and felt so sad when I realised that I would never get to see what would come of the seeds that I had planted but God reminded me of this scripture:  1 Corinthians 3: 4- 10 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon…” Though I planted the seeds, I am happy to know that the Lord has someone else there to follow the process through to the end. So looking forward to growing session in the UK this year!

8) The Camp Meeting

The camp meeting was such a blessing! I was truly convicted of my duty before God. It was such a joy to spend endless hours listening to the word of God from the lips of men and women who have given their lives to serve Him. It was also a blessing to spend much time with like-minded people discussing the message and to see such deep dedication manifested towards the study of God's word. I was deeply moved and humbled to see that the spirit of God is moving all over the world, to know that there are people separated by sea and land and yet we all come to the same conclusions when we study the bible. What a privilege it is to have the bible so readily available to us, that we might have the opportunity to understand truths that angels desire to look into (1 Peter 1:12)! God has given us such a great work to do for him in these last days, and it’s so humbling to know that I can be a part of that should I choose to follow his appointed way. O to be faithful to Him, and to avail myself fully to His service! This has been my hope and prayer since leaving Arkansas.

Not sure if I will be travelling in 2016, but you never know!  Thanks for reading my travel diary, till next time J

A letter to a hurting friend

I would like to share a letter that I wrote to a friend last summer. Generally I can be a very private person but I’m beginning to learn that sometimes it’s important to be open and to share aspects of your life or personal experiences to help someone who needs to be encouraged.

If you are hurting maybe this will encourage you too?

For anonymity purposes I will refer to this friend as Mindy.

**********************************************************************************
Dearest Mindy

I see your current change of environment as a turning point for you and the beginning of a new journey. I know currently you feel lost and without hope and I know that deep down you desire to get your life back and to get back with God. The above things may seem so far away from you but know that even today, as you read this letter God is in the process of drawing you back to him. The journey has already begun!

I would like to open up my heart to you and share with you a story.

In 2012/2013 I was so broken and far from God. My life was a complete train wreck and no matter how hard I tried (in my own strength) I just couldn’t see beyond or rise above my pain and disappointment. I think it was in December 2013 that I finally cracked. I realised that I could no longer try and “live” without pursuing Christ. My life would always be empty and dry, I needed the fountain of living water!

As hard as it was I decided to be intentional about seeking the Lord and truly giving my heart to Him. I started by resolving to wake up at 5am every morning to spend time with Him (whatever that meant to me at the time). I knew that I was on some sort of journey and I knew I had to trust in the Lord and take things a day at a time. I needed a tangible way to document my journey back to the Lord so I decided to write a daily journal, writing one page a day. I wrote to the lord and told him about my day to day life, my hopes and aspirations in Him… I told Him what I had learned in my devotional time and asked Him to help me with scriptures that I didn’t understand. I asked Him to help me when I had issues with my car. I spoke to Him when I was upset, happy, sad, excited, confused… I opened up to Him about my weaknesses and asked for strength to overcome. Many times I wrote to Him in confession and repentance.

Over a period of time (quite quickly actually) Christ became my heart’s one choice, my greatest confidant and truest companion and friend. I felt alive Mindy, after being dead for a long time. Sometimes I look back at my journal entries and my experiences and as painful as things were at the time I can now see how God’s hand was in it. Christ used it all to help me to grow and to develop. I am so thankful to Him and I can honestly say I wouldn’t have had things any other way.

As I am writing my experience, these words came to mind, “In Jesus we have an enduring, unchanging friend, and though all earthly prospects should fail and every earthly friend prove treacherous, yet He is faithful still.” Manuscript Releases Vol 12 page 115

Please see enclosed a gift from a friend to a friend. I know that you are so hurt and broken at the moment but I believe God can give you beauty for ashes. Pain shapes the most beautiful things in the world. I know that God has a plan for you, I know that He is on your side, and that He will take this situation and use it for His glory and for your benefit. Please Mindy put your trust in Him and give Him access to your heart. Please don’t take this gift lightly please commit to the journey. I encourage you to be intentional about spending quiet time before the Lord and to write (as least one page) in your new journal every day.

I believe this time next year things will be a lot different and you will look back at everything while reading your journal and you will give all glory to God. Let it be beautiful Mindy, allow Christ to work on your heart.

I love you Mindy (even though I’m not always the best at saying it or showing it) you are a special and precious friend to me. I am glad that God has allowed us to share a close friendship on this earth. I can’t wait to see you happy again and I am looking forward to seeing what God is going to do in your life.

With overflowing Love,

xx Daisy xx

Travel Diaries: Paris, France - Part 2

Continuing on from part 1 J

6) Beware of pick pockets!!!!

No exaggeration! I read some tips online on how to avoid being a victim of pick pockets and I determined to stay safe. I put all my valuables in a small cotton shoulder bag and wore it under my jacket. On the second day of being in Paris we were in Place de la Concorde and I saw a picture of Cain (from the biblical story of Cain and Abel) lamenting. I was taking pictures of it with both mine and Estella’s phone in my hands.  Three girls came out of nowhere and asked me if I could speak English. (They probably thought I was on my own as Estella was standing on the side of the statue and out of view.) Without me realising it the girls had formed a subtle circle around me and I was in the centre. As soon I heard the girl say “Sign here please” My mind went back to an online article I read and according to Estella I firmly said “No!” and "teleported" myself out of their circle! Estella found my swift exit incredibly amusing. Without hesitation the three girls quickly moved on. OK, you don’t need to be as dramatic as I was but make sure you keep your belonging close to you and also be aware of your surroundings especially in busy public touristy places. Estella and I giggled at the fact that those pickpockets would probably have relieved me of the banana peels and apple cores that were building up in my bag, but I guess it’s all about not giving them an opportunity at all.

Statue of Cain Lamenting - Place de la Concorde

7)  Understand who you’re traveling with

I learnt so much about Estella as well as myself on this holiday. Estella is very much into being flexible and ad hoc, I on the other hand am into being structured and following schedules. This could have been a point of contention as we are complete opposites but instead it gave us both an opportunity to explore each other’s personalities. Without prior planning day 1 of our trip was my day, it was very structured and all planned to the minutest detail. Estella took part in that and I think it allowed her to see how much organisation goes into planning activities for a holiday and also how many things you can fit into a day if everything is pre planned. Day 2 was Estella’s day which was very “as and when”, we literally woke up in the morning with no idea or goal in mind. This would ordinarily frustrate me but day 2 ended up being such a fun and spontaneous day. I learnt how to relax and simply “go with the flow” and allow the day to evolve naturally. So when traveling with anyone, seek to understand exactly who they are and do not allow your differences to hinder the holiday, but rather use it as an opportunity to get to know them (and yourself) better.

8) Being polite will help you

To keep costs low we booked to stay at a hostel in a female dorm room of 6. It was my first time staying in a hostel and I was nervous about the experience due to my own preconceived ideas of hostels and also not knowing who we would be sharing with. We got to the hostel early Sunday morning and clearly woke up the receptionist when we buzzed to get in. He asked if we could come back in an hour, we were so shocked and annoyed as the website stated that the reception was open for 24 hours. We found it hard to make out what else he was saying as he was literally half asleep and mumbling English words, but we think he was asking us to leave our luggage in the lockers and come back in an hour and we would be able to have our room. I was so tempted to make a fuss about the whole situation as we had travelled the whole night and needed to sleep, shower and eat ASAP! We complied however and came back after an hour. When we got back Ester decided to speak to the receptionist in French and to build up a rapport with him while he checked us in. Well, he ended up giving us a free breakfast, the best room in the hostel and we had the room to ourselves! Praise God, I was so happy and thankful!!!! Now I am not saying that you should be polite just so you can get what you want, but from our experience we found that it pays to be polite and build bridges when travelling abroad.

The "Love Lock" Bridge

9) Enjoy the experience

That’s it! Just enjoy it! Enjoy every moment of your holiday even the parts that don’t seem very exciting or that don’t go as planned.  I enjoyed sitting with Estella in a self-manned laundrette for an hour waiting for the hostel to open.  I enjoyed walking around Paris in the rain with our feet soaking wet, looking for a raw vegan restaurant which we didn’t even step into in the end as it was so pricy! I enjoyed taking pictures under a tree at the park and having a bird poop on my hand and screaming so loud that Estella got scared and ran into me and the bird poop smudged on her, we couldn’t stop laughing. I enjoyed just sitting on the L’Open Tour “hop on, hop off” bus all day with no real destination in mind. I enjoyed Estrella and I randomly discovering an open green park area and spreading my sleeping bag around the grass and just lying there watching the world go by. Those precious moments, relish them. You don’t usually experience those things and being in another country everyday so make sure you enjoy your time whatever happens.

Best Falafel Place in the world!!!!

10) Trust in the Lord

Last but not least, trust in the Lord J

Estella and I literally put this whole holiday in God’s hands, from our safety to our spending money, even to our friendship. It can be scary travelling to a foreign country as sometimes people go on holiday sadly to never return. Some may laugh at this, but I was amazed when I got to Paris and the realisation hit me that God is literally everywhere and he is always with me. This comforted me as there were times when I was concerned about whether we would be safe in Paris; I realised that I am as safe there (in Paris) as I would be here (in the UK) because ‘It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.’ Lamentation 3:22. God is always with us wherever we are so give your holiday to him, trust him; He will keep you safe, sustain your friendships and untimely make your holiday enjoyable.

Estella, we did it!!!!!!
